Reverend David Martin
David was raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania the tenth of eleven children born to George and Mildred Martin. He pursued his education at Lancaster Bible College and then Millersville University where he received a degree in education. On March 24, 1973 he married Susan Harbison. After a brief time in public education Pastor Martin attended Penn State University and received a Masters in Education in “Counselor Education” and “Family Studies”. He then became the founding campus pastor for State College Alliance Church where he and his wife served for seven years as a campus pastor founding the Alliance Christian Fellowship of Penn State University in 1975. While at Penn State David also served as the chaplain for the football team and helped start the Christian Athletes Fellowship, which ministered to varsity athletes in all sports.
In 1981 the Martins moved to the Seattle area as David served a church there for five years. While there David attended Fuller Seminary's Seattle campus. For several years David and Susie were involved as Bible study leaders for the Seattle Seahawks. In 1986 David accepted a position to become the Director of Campus Ministries at Regent University where he served until 1992. For two years he also served as the Director of Alumni & Church Relations. He furthered his education by receiving a CAS (Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies) in Clinical Theology. This blended psychology with spiritual formation.
In 1992 David was involved in the formation of a Christian, in-patient psychiatric program at a local hospital. The center served the community until 1995 at which time David went to work with Rapha Treatment Centers as Regional Director for Church and Community Relations. In 1996 David began to teach as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Psychology & Counseling. He also is a regular guest lecturer in the School of Divinity. David then became the Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care and Counseling at First Baptist Church of Norfolk and ministered there for three years.
In 1998 he was appointed by Virginia’s governor to the “Governor's Commission on Mental Health, Community Services & Substance Abuse”, where he served for 2 years. In 2000 Genesis Community Church was formed at that time and David served there as pastor until 2005. David returned to Regent in 2004 as University Chaplain and served there for two years.
Over the past 15 years David served on a number of “restoration teams” working with fallen leaders and ministry leaders overseeing the restoration process. He has spoken at ministry conferences with an emphasis to leaders on maintaining balance and health in their personal lives and families.
David and Susie have two sons, Seth and Jared and a daughter, Leah, a son in law, Michael, and daughters in law, Lisa, and Caitlin, and four granddaughters, Felicity, AnnaSophia, Abigail, and Mia.
Over the years David has served on a number of ministry boards including Eden Family Institute, COMPASS (ministers to prevent childhood abuse), and Pastors in Residence. (Assists displaced pastors return to ministry in a safe setting)
Reverend Marty O’Rourke, D.Min
The Rev. Dr. Marty O’Rourke is pastor of Church of the Messiah in Chesapeake, Virginia. Serving in pastoral ministry for more than 30 years, he has seen many gifted and capable Christian leaders go off-course because of moral failures, causing enormous hurt to their victims, their families, their churches, and the cause of Christ. While earning his “doctor of ministry” degree from Regent University, he began researching the subject for his doctoral dissertation and developed a workshop titled “Guard Your Heart: Sexual Misconduct Prevention Program for Ministers.”
Designed to prevent Christian leaders from falling into sexual misconduct, the program has been presented to groups of pastors and Navy chaplains, as well as to M.Div and D.Min. divinity students. Marty has also been appointed to do the required prevention training for the clergy in his Anglican denomination. In addition, he has presented the workshop and ministered to more than 600 pastors plus their spouses from numerous denominations in Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
He and his wife, Wendy, were married in 1981. They have four children and one grandchild.
